Anaerobic Biological Treatment

Anaerobic digestion is a naturally occurring process that is effectively utilized to treat waste. In its most basic form a lagoon with either a natural or synthetic cover the process has been around for decades and is quite effective if significant space is available.

At sites where space is an issue predominantly urban location high rate anaerobic biological treatment digests are the system of choice. In these digests the anaerobic bacteria are maintained in comparatively small chambers and in high concentrations, thus increasing the effective sludge retention time. And, as a result of the process, other by-products are produced bio gas (capable of providing heat) and compost for soil improvement.

Digests are commonly used for sewage, municipal waste water or industrial wastewater treatment. They significantly help improve the quality of effluent being released into the environment and are a major component in water recycling from high-organic-load waste water.

Anaerobic biological treatment plants will typically treat high-strength waste water to a level that will permit discharge to a municipal sewer system. With further treatment such as an SBR (Sequencing Batch Reactor) or MBR (Membrane Bioreactor) followed by RO (Reverse Osmosis), it is possible to reuse water for selected purposes.
