For nearly 40 years Chokhavatia Associates has been a leader in the civil and environmental engineering sector. The company was established with the vision to provide environmental services to various industries with the goal of promoting sustainability and environmental stewardship. Chokhavatia Associates has extensive experience designing and implementing environmental engineering services for a diverse range of industries.
Industrial wastewater is the water created during an industrial processes which is often contaminated with biological and chemical compounds related to the specific industrial process. Each industrial wastewater effluent is unique and requires an individual solution to meet the treatment standard for water discharge, while complying with environmental regulations and minimizing costs for the industrial plant. Chokhavatia Associates has the experience to implement innovative solutions for any wastewater effluent that requires treatment.
The design of sewage treatment plants to address municipal and industry sewage are often much larger than industrial effluent treatment plants because they are centralized. Sewage treatment plants often include a clarifying treatment, which settles out large particles and an activated sludge process to minimize the waste produced.
The goal of drinking water treatment plants is to clean water to a level that is safe for potable use. The source of the drinking water is chosen for quality to minimize the treatment required to bring the water to drinking water standards. Drinking water is extracted from surface waters or groundwater and pumped to a treatment plant for processing. Each drinking water treatment plant is unique and many factors are considered in the design. Generally water treatment to drinking water standards requires several sequential treatment processes based on the contaminants present in the source water.
Aeration – Aeration can occur mechanically with mixers or by the movement of water between different elevations or over baffles to increase the oxygen content in the water and to vent undesirable gases.
Coagulation – Coagulation occurs by adding chemical polymers that clump smaller particles into larger particles, which are heavier and easier to settle.
Sedimentation – Sedimentation occurs after coagulation where the water is moved slowly through a basin and particles are settled to the bottom. The water exits the basin at a height above the bottom of the tank so the water has significantly less particles.
Filtration – Filtration occurs by passing the water through filters that are made of sand, carbon or membrane filters. When the water makes contact with the filters small particles attach to the filter media and are removed from the water.
Disinfection – The water is disinfected by using chemicals like chlorine or other systems like ozonation and ultraviolet light. The goal of disinfection is to have the water in contact with the disinfection component for a long enough time to remove all potential pathogens.
Storage – After treatment the water is stored safely in covered tanks. The water is occasionally is stored in a water tower to create pressure that is distributed to the water supply piping network.
Pristine drinking water sources may only require aeration and disinfection, while other water sources may require nearly all of the treatment processes to meet the standards for potable water.
Air pollution control and monitoring is important for industries that emit contaminants into the atmosphere through effluent gas streams. Chokhavtia Assoicates has developed equipment to monitor air by placing sensors near the effluent air stream to measure pollutant gasses.
Additionally air pollution is mitigated by using various treatment technologies to remediate effluent gas streams before they are emitted to the atmosphere. Mostly commonly a wet scrubber is used where the effluent gas is put in contact with a wet solution. To remove dust from effluent gas water may be used. To mitigate toxic and corrosive gases chemical reagents that are known to react with specific gases will be added to the wet solution to clean the effluent gas stream.
Chokhavatia Associates, helps industries to assess their environmental compliance and management of their company by completing an environmental audit. The environmental audit includes a series of evaluations that reviews the safety and compliance of various processes within the company. The audit will include a full report detailing the outcome of the audit and provide solutions for upgrading company processes to meet or exceed environmental compliance.
Prior to development or completion of a project Chokhavatia Associates completes an Environmental Impact Assessment to evaluate the impacts a proposed project may have on the environment. Primary data is collected to define the status of the environment and includes air and water quality data. Secondary data is collected historically to understand the existing environmental conditions at the site. A detailed report is completed and decisions are made about the environmental impact of the project, and changes that must be made to minimize impact.
